Missions

These are the events that comprise the main storylines in Final Fantasy XI. There are different storylines for each expansion disc and downloadable add-on. While they can be viewed as being entirely independent of each other, the nation missions and the missions of the two first expansions can be viably set on a timeline, starting from the earliest added to the latest added.

Quests

Quests are shorter story lines that in the grand majority of the cases cannot be set on a timeline, although some do require progression in one of the mission lines or completion of other quests before becoming unlocked.

Quests in the present in the core areas raise fame, and most quests in those areas will not become available until you have sufficient fame to book it. See the basic guide for a more in-depth explanation of fame. Note that fame doesn't affect the Aht Urhgan, Crystal War or Abyssea quests.

Fights

The list below has different non-standard fights and fight-related activities in Final Fantasy XI. Rewards range from the most useful to the most useless in the game, depending on the activity. Most require a level 75+ job to participate, although several can be accessed right after character creation.

Others

This is a collection of non-fighting type (or mostly so) activities in Final Fantasy XI. They range from gathering items from the wild to raising an NPC of some kind to help you in different activities. Some can be participated in from the start of the game, others require a certain level or access to a certain area before it becomes available.

Crafting

Crafting is the activity of synthesizing items with crystals from various different materials. They are further divided into separate crafting skills of their own. See Crafting for further details.
A special form of crafting is Synergy. While related closely to crafting, it is technically its own kind of activity, although one based on crafting. See more about synergy under its own page.
