Armiger (Encyclopedia)

Armiger is a concept from Final Fantasy XV. There are actually two distinct concepts that seem to be conflated under the English-language word, but are actually separate. The first of them is the Armiger ability (ファントムソード召喚 [phantom sword shoukan] or 'royal arms summon' in Japanese) that is familiar to the English-speaking players. The ability is handled in greater detail on its own page. This page is about the Armiger ability in lore.

The lore Armiger (武器召喚 [buki shoukan] or 'weapon summon' in Japanese) is sometimes vaguely referred to as the 'power of Kings' in the English version, although this may in fact include more powers than just Armiger.

The power of Kings, or the power of Armiger, was bestowed to the Lucis line in times right after the Astral War, well more than 2,000 years ago1, in times before the birth of the Crystal, the forging of the Ring of the Lucii or the foundation of the kingdom of Lucis. At the same time the gods also gave other powers to other chosen bloodlines, such as the power of the Oracles to the Fleuret line.

The power was bestowed by the 'gods', no further specifics are officially given, although some speculate it may have been given by Bahamut considering how Bahamut's own attack includes various blades of light. It is generally understood the various powers were given to mankind to stop the Starscourge, although it is notable that they were given before the Scourge actually started manifesting as illness some 2,000 years ago.

It is unknown just how the power of Kings is only present in the direct Lucis descendants and not any branch families. Either there has only ever been one surviving descendant in each generation, or some other mechanism is in place so that the power isn't present in just about each and every Lucian citizen as would be the case after 2,000 years if each biological child received the powers. In this vein of thought, it should also be noted that at least once in history there have been two surviving descendants with the power of kings, these being Ardyn Lucis Caelum and his younger brother, the Founder King, presumably called Izunia.

The Power

The power of Armiger, the power of Kings, is the power to summon weapons (and other things such as fishing rods, as Noctis is seen doing), and is used by the main characters each time they call out or change their weapons. The King can bestow their power upon others, and this is the reason Noctis's friends can use it as well. The previous king Regis bestowed this power on many others, including the entire Kingsglaive. Note that the powers of the Crystal and the Ring, are an entirely separate thing from the Armiger summoning. Armiger is an inherent power that the Lucis line is born with, the powers of the Crystal can only be wielded through the Ring.

To be able to summon a weapon, anyone with the power must be in physical possession of the weapon or item being summoned. If this item is taken away it can no longer be summoned until the item is retrieved. This is seen in the DLC Episode Prompto where Ardyn Izunia takes away Prompto's gun and he becomes unable to summon it until it's given back to him.

The power of Kings can be artificially blocked, as seen in the Zegnautus Fortress during the game's story. A device in Zegnautus is generating a force field that prevents the summoning of weapons (and presumably the use of other aspects of the power of Kings) within it until the device is destroyed.

It is worth noting that while the 'power of Kings' seems to include warp striking and the power of elemental magic (Elemancy), these things are not included in the power of 'Armiger'. Basically, while the power of 'weapon summon' is not mentioned in English separately, it is one of the three aspects that form the power of Kings in total. The two other aspects can also be bestowed on others in their own way, as seen by the Kingslaives' power to warp and the ability of all Noctis's companions to use the bottled magic he produces with Elemancy.
