Materia

Materia is a condensed form of Lifestream, looking like a crystal ball that fits into your palm. They have different colors according to what kind of powers they hold. The powers are said to come from the fact that it's made of Lifestream, and thus holds the memories of the Cetra.

While the mechanic was abolished in later games, in the original Final Fantasy VII each materia could gain Ability Points when equipped, and through them their own levels. At certain levels, the materia would then gain new abilities it could provide, or make the ability it provides better than before. When a materia reaches its maximum level, it would count as 'mastered' and spawn a new level 1 materia of the same type as itself.

While the mechanic of leveling up and being mastered was preserved in some later games, since the materia types no longer correspond with the original game's materia names and instead correspond with ability names, you can check the ability pages of the sequels for the other materia system details.
