Item Management

There is a mind-blowing amount of different items in Final Fantasy XI. Because of this any completionist worth their salt will be feeling the effects of the constrained storage and inventory available, and these might give your average player some troubles too. Read on for various ways to store everything, and the different types of items, and how to do commerce.

Item Types

Read on below for some of the different types of items in Final Fantasy XI. Note that these also correspond to how the items are listed in the Auction House, so they bear memorizing.

First of all are the different kinds of equipment. Equipment are divided into two major groups, armor and weapons, which are both divided into further sub-groups. Weapons are naturally the items you equip in your Main slot (although sometimes also the Sub, Ranged and Ammo slots), and deal damage. They are further divided into different types of weapons, like Hand-to-Hand, Ranged and Great Swords. See here for a list of weapons.
Armor is further divided into the visible slots of Shields, Head, Body, Hands, Legs and Feet. In addition there are the slots Neck, Earrings, Rings, Back and Waist. See the armor list for all visible items, and Accessories for non-visible ones.

Foods are one of the basic item types in Final Fantasy XI, and vital for top-notch performance in battle. Foods will raise some of your stats, the stat raised will heavily depend on what type of food you are eating. Another type of items that affect your stats are medicines - that is, potions, ethers and others of their kind. See here for a full list of them.

In addition to those basic types of items, there are the various materials required for crafting (see Materials for those), and all the miscellaneous items, including but not limited to crystals, beast-made items, ninja tools, magic scrolls and corsair cards and dice. Finally in the basic items there are the various types of furniture, which can be placed in your Mog House for various effects. See Furniture for a list.

Last but not the least, there are the various types of Key Items. These are further divided into permanent and non-permanent key items, claim slips (for when you have stored equipment at various equipment storage NPCs) and maps of the world.

Storage

There are various different storage ways available to any player. The first and most basic one of these is inventory. These are the items you carry with you and can use at any time. To begin with the amount is restricted to 40 slots, but it can be raised up to 80 through the Gobbiebag quests, in 5-slot increments, ranging from the quest The Gobbiebag Part I to the final quest The Gobbiebag Part X.

Your second basic option for storage is the Mog Safe. This can be accessed at any time through the moogle in your Mog House and any Nomad Moogle. Items in safe cannot be accessed outside of these moogles. To begin with your Safe will have 60 item slots in it, but it can be expanded in increments of 10 through quests, up to a hard limit of 80. These quests are Give a Moogle a Break, The Moogle's Picnic! and Moogles in the Wild.

The third option you will likely come across is the Storage. Storage becomes available when you place furniture in your Mog House, each furniture has a different amount of Storage slots in it. Each piece of furniture placed will raise the amount of item slots in your Storage, up to a maximum of 80.

Mog Lockers were added with the Treasures of Aht Urhgan expansion pack. Gaining access to a character's Mog Locker requires you to first reach Aht Urhgan, then join Salaheem's Sentinels - that is, complete the second TAU mission. After this, you can buy access time for your Locker from either the moogle in your Mog House or the NPC Fubruhn in Aht Urhgan Whitegate. You can only set or retrieve items from your Locker while you have paid access time remaining, otherwise your items will stay locked away in the Locker.
Initially a locker will come with 30 item slots, although you can buy expansions for it. These expansions each cost more than the last, and will increase your Locker's item slots by 10 each time, to a maximum of 80.

Finally, there is the Mog Satchel, which is available to every character who has a Security Token bound to their account. The Mog Satchel will have exactly as many item slots as your inventory has, and will expand at the same rate as your inventory. Items in Mog Satchel are accessible at all times, although any in your Satchel must be first transferred to your inventory before you can actually use them.

In addition to these methods that store your items while still clearly marking them as yours, there are the various storage NPCs. They will store your items for you (there exists several different types of storage NPCs for different kinds of items), and in exchange give you a claim slip - a type of a key item - to notify you that you own an item of that type, and where it is stored. Storage NPCs cannot store all types of items.
Do note however, that armor can generally only be stored in full sets, and should you not have a full set to store the NPC will not accept them. Also note that any HQ item cannot be stored at all, and if your item has a signature on it the signature will be erased on storage.

Auction Houses

The Auction Houses are the most common way to do commerce in Final Fantasy XI. They are big buildings clearly marked on any city map, and will usually have multiple player characters gathered around the several counters each of them has. All Auction Houses are connected into one system, meaning you can put an item up for sale anywhere and have it bought from any Auction House counter anywhere in Vana'diel.1

Every player can put up items to sell at any AH, provided the item can be sold through AHs. Items branded Rare and Ex generally cannot be sold. In addition, you can only place up to 7 items for auction at any given time. Should you fill up your slots and desire to put something else for auction, you must first remove one of your old auctions before you can do it. Likewise, once an item has sold or its bidding period has passed, you must remove it manually from your sales list before you can fill that auction slot with something else.
When putting an item for sale you must define at what price you are willing to part with it. You will never get less than this price, although note that if you give too high a price nobody will buy it. Also note that only single items or full stacks can be placed at auction.
When setting an item up for sale in an AH, the AH will demand a fee to list the item. This fee will depend on the price you set for the item, and whether it is a single item or a stack. Fees in Jeuno AH are higher than the AHs in starting nations, and the fees in Aht Urhgan are higher than those of Jeuno.

To bid on an item, you simply find the item you wish to bid on and enter the amount of gil you are willing to pay for it. If there is someone willing to sell at the price you specified or lower, you will buy the item. If not, you will be notified that your bid wasn't successful.

When bidding on an item when more than one of it are in stock, the item with the lowest sale price that falls within the bid will be the one bought. For example, if you bid 2,000 gil for a stack of dark crystals, and there are 3 stacks in stock, priced at 1,900 gil, 2,000 gil and 2,100 gil. Your bid will buy the stack costing 1,900 gil, but you will still spend all of that 2,000 gil you bid. The money you spent will be sent to the seller of the stack of dark crystals costing 1,900 gil. Likewise, the seller that is selling their stack of dark crystals for 2,100 gil runs the risk of never selling their crystals, because the stacks priced lower will always be sold first. Only if some items put for sale at identical price will the older one be sold first.

Selling items at the Jeuno AH is so wide-spread and important to the economy of any given world that there is a site dedicated to listing the stock and recent prices of items, the FFXI AH. The site is used by many players as one of their primary FF11 information sites.

Bazaars

Bazaaring is the second most prominent way to sell expensive items. A bazaar is a personal shop a player has, indicated by the icon of a brown bag next to their name. To access a player's bazaar, you must /check them and choose to view their wares. This will display the list of items and their prices the player has set for sale in their bazaar.

To set items in your bazaar, you must navigate to the Bazaar option in your main menu, and choose to set items for sale. Note that any item you wish to sell must be in your inventory, and after setting it for sale it cannot be removed from your inventory unless you decide to cancel the sale - or naturally, once another player buys it. For any item you place for sale in your bazaar you must set the exact price you wish to sell it for. Items in your bazaar cannot be bought for less or more than that price.

The bazaar system is good for selling expensive items (when the player feels that the AH fee would cut into their profits too much) and for items that cannot be sold through the AH.

Besides AHs and bazaars, you can also buy and sell items to/from NPC shops. However, NPCs will often offer to buy your items for much less than their going price among the player base, and will offer to sell some items for much more than their worth. Be sure to compare prices before making the decision to buy.
