Dark Knight

Dark Knight (暗黒騎士 [ankoku kishi] or 'dark knight', 魔剣士 [makenshi] or 'demon swordsman' or ダークナイト [dark knight] in Japanese) is a fusion of several very similar jobs in English. It has also been known as 'Dark Fencer' and 'Fell Knight'. They started appearing way back in Final Fantasy III, and have had regular appearances since. Dark Knights can be recognized by their heavy black armor and abilities that use up their own strength to deal more damage to the enemies. Their weapon of choice has varied along the years, from swords and great swords to scythes. They are somewhat similar to Berserker in that they are very strong, and are often depicted as opposites to Paladins.
Examples of Dark Knights are Cecil Harvey from the beginning of FF4, Zeid from FF11 and Goffard Gaffgarion1 from Tactics.

Final Fantasy III

The Dark Knight (魔剣士 in Japanese) job makes its first appearance in Final Fantasy III, with some eccentricities compared to later games. In the original Famicom game, it knows low-level White Magic instead of having the Souleater ability. This is changed in the remakes. The "Dark Blades" wielded by Dark Knights are actually Katanas, which can only be used by either Dark Knights or Ninja.

Final Fantasy Tactics

Dark Knight in FF Tactics is a bit of a special case. There are in fact two jobs in the game that can be called 'Dark Knight', by their name and by their abilities both. The first is 暗黒騎士 [ankoku kishi] or 'dark knight' in Japanese, and is the job available to all characters. The second is ダークナイト [dark knight], and is only available to Goffard Gaffgarion. This latter job has been translated as 'Fell Knight', but considering that it's original name is literally 'Dark Knight' spelled out in Japanese katakana, its details have been listed on this page as well.

This warrior exchanges life for power, using Darkness to disintegrate all who stand before him.
