Dragoon

Dragoon (竜騎士 [ryuukishi] or 'dragon knight' in Japanese) was originally added in Final Fantasy II, and as such has a long history with the game. They carry lances or spears, and are known for their ability Jump, and their distinct dragon-themed blue or purple armor. Sometimes they also fight with a pet wyvern. A similar job to it is the recent addition of Lancer. Consequently, Lancer was a translation used for Dragoon in some old translations.
Some examples of Dragoons are Ricard Highwind from FF2, Kain Highwind from FF4, Freya Crescent from FF9, Erpalacion B Chanoix from FF11, Estinien from FF14 and Barbara from Dimensions. Other examples of lance-users exist, however, they correspond better with the Lancer job.

Final Fantasy III

In Final Fantasy III Dragoon is part of the third group of jobs unlocked, and corresponds with the Water Crystal. Their Jump ability deals heavy damage towards flying enemies.

Dragoons are affiliated with Saronia and factor into its history. NPCs note that Saronia, once terrorized by the beastly Garuda was saved by a Dragoon. Additionally, Saronia's military force heavily featured Dragoons, and the Dragon Spire was built as a result.

Final Fantasy V

Dragoon in Final Fantasy V is one of the last jobs unlocked. They are a niche job capable of good defenses and high attack when geared properly. Other than that, there is not much to be said about them.

Final Fantasy XI

Dragoon is one of the advanced jobs in FF11, and it's unlocked with the quest The Holy Crest.

Dragoons are some of the best damage dealers in the game, and that is indeed their main role most of the time. In fact, coupled with their wyvern, they do the highest overall damage out of all jobs up until level 65, and continues to shine even after that point. In addition, their enmity is shared with their wyvern, and they later gain abilities that remove most of their enmity altogether, so it is much easier for them to go all out without catching hate.

Besides partying, Dragoons are also very adept at soloing, due to the fact that their wyvern type changes depending on their support job. While most support jobs give them an offensive wyvern, a mage will give them a defensive wyvern, which can heal them when they drop to 33% - or in the purpose of a rarer, multipurpose wyvern, 25% - HP.

When Dragoons were first introduced in FF11, they were quickly written off partially because their Call Wyvern ability could only be activated once every 2 hours. Now, however, on a 20-minute timer, they were doubtlessly more efficient, though the nickname sometimes still surfaced.

Abilities

Dragoon's old 2-hour ability is, as mentioned, Call Wyvern. As the name implied, it calls the Dragoon's wyvern. As this was not viable for battle, it later got changed to a 20-minute timer, though, like a 2-hour ability, only a Dragoon main job can use it, and it is available from level 1.

Dragoon's new 2-hour ability is Spirit Surge. It can only be used while a wyvern is out, and adds the wyvern's strength to the Dragoon's… so to speak. It increases and heals the Dragoon's HP, adds the wyvern's TP to the Dragoon's, and gives a large Strength and Haste boost; and boosts the power of the Dragoon's various Jump abilities.

No Dragoon would be complete without Jump, of course. Dragoon has several different types of Jump this time around, most of which deal with getting rid of enmity. They also have a few that enhance their wyverns.

Dragoons have rather rounded stats, good for many things - but mainly attacking. Their highest are Strength and Vitality, the latter of which is used in some Jump calculations. They also have average Dexterity and Agility, as expected of a damage dealer, but, surprisingly, also decent Mind and Charisma. Their only low stat is Intelligence, which they would normally not need at all, anyway.

Defensively, though they can't use shields, and wouldn't use them anyway with their two-handed polearms, Dragoons are decent with a C rating in parrying and a C- in evasion.

Equipment

Dragoons can equip a good deal of weapons, though they would normally choose polearms, for their A+ proficiency and high damage. They are also decent with a staff at B-. Other, not as viable choices are swords at C-, and clubs and daggers both at E.

The job-specific equipment sets for Dragoon all look similar to traditional Dragoon armor from past FFs, though they range from blue to purple to black. Most of them enhance either pet wyverns or Jump abilities.

Lore

Legend has it that Dragoons were many, in the past. A Dragoon would hatch a wyvern, which would display a Holy Crest, and make a bond with it, and the two would fight together. However, wyverns were born more and more without a Holy Crest, and those wyverns would become corrupt, and take over their owners' minds with madness. At present, there was only one Dragoon left, Cyranuce M Cutauleon, a knight of San d'Oria who became corrupt from his wyvern. The quest to unlock the Dragoon job brings Cyranuce's story to its conclusion, and brings into the world a wyvern displaying the Holy Crest once again.
