Onion Knight

Onion Knight (たまねぎ剣士 [tamanegi kenshi] or 'onion swordsman' in Japanese) is the original 'basic' job (aka Freelancer), although it was featured in this role only in the original NES release of Final Fantasy III. In all other games it has appeared in, Onion Knight has been a special highly advanced or secret job, starting out very weak but becoming one of the strongest (or the strongest, as is most often the case) jobs in the game. Due to the nature of the job there are no character examples of it (unless you count the original playable characters of FF3, or their representative Onion Knight from Dissidia). Their appearance is always the same shape, with onion-shaped helms with a big tuft of feathers on the crest, poofy pants and a slim breastplate. These can be any colors, although red and light blue are the most common.
Of special note are the onion equipment often associated with the job. These can either be starter equipment (FF11, FF14), or end-game equipment (later releases of FF4).

Final Fantasy Tactics

Although able to equip all weapons, this sad warrior excels at none, and is far from being the most powerful.

Onion Knight is one of the special jobs in FF Tactics. It is always Mastered, and gains a huge amount of advantages in higher job levels. However, it does not gain job levels normally, but instead gains one job level for every two of the other jobs that the character has Mastered (that is to say, when the character has mastered Knight, Archer, White Mage, Black Mage, Monk, Thief, Mystic, Time Mage, Geomancer, Dragoon, Orator, Summoner, Samurai, Ninja, Arithmetician and Bard/Dancer, ONK will have reached level 8).
Please note that Onion Knight does not learn any native abilities. They also do not gain any experience by taking actions in battle. If you want to take advantage of the ONK's considerable growth bonuses, you will have to find another way to gain exp.
