Thief

Thief (シーフ [thief] in Japanese) is one of the iconic Final Fantasy jobs with its green clothes. As one of the original six jobs, it has appeared in almost every Final Fantasy game to date. Along the years, the jobs Ninja and Hunter have come to resemble it somewhat, and it bears some association with the Chemist job due to their common interest in items. While Steal is traditionally a Thief ability, it has sometimes been associated with Ninja. The same in reverse with Poach and Hunter. Thief and Ninja are also traditionally quick but fragile jobs.
Examples of Thieves are not hard to come by. There is Paul in FF2, Locke Cole in FF6, Zidane Tribal in FF9, Nanaa Mihgo in FF11, Vaan in FF12 and Luso Clemens in FFTA2. As more of a mix between Thief and Chemist, there is Rikku from FF10, and finally the numerous Thief/Ninja mixes from various games.

"Expert bandits who espy secret passages and foil back attacks"

While in general Thieves aren't useful in dealing damage, healing or buffing, they do have their uses. Stealing allows you to get many powerful equips early on, and Find Passages is invaluable to those who would rather not waste time checking every wall for hidden passages or keep a walkthrough by their side. Thieves also have the highest AGI in the game.

Final Fantasy XI

Thief is one of the six basic jobs in FF11. Every player can choose it from the start.

Thieves in FFXI take a role similar to Assassins. Though they can steal, they work more in a damage and support role. In a party, their main job is hate control - making sure enemies are targeting the tank. Because of their high movement speed and evasion, good ranged attacks, and low attack damage, they also often work as pullers.

Despite their low attack damage stemming from daggers, thieves can do very high spike damage from their two special hate-control attacks, Sneak Attack and Trick Attack, making them an invaluable part of most parties. They also come equipped with Treasure Hunter, a passive trait that gives them better drop rates, which is always welcomed.

In addition to their party roles, Thieves are very accomplished are soloing. Through usage of status bolts, they can debuff, sleep, and even drain from monsters. With their naturally high evasion and a Ninja subjob, Thieves are almost untouchable.

Another useful thing Thieves can do is pick locks. Though there is a chance of failure, lock-picking is still often much more practical than farming keys.

Most people will go as Thief, either as main or sub-job, when camping NMs, farming items, or hunting treasure chests.

Abilities

Thief's 2-hour ability is Perfect Dodge. As the name suggests, it grants them a perfect dodge rate for 30 seconds. It does not, however, dodge magical or ranged attacks.

Another fun Thief ability is Flee, which grants 30 seconds of increased movement speed. No Thief would be complete without Steal and Mug, of course, which steal items or gil, respectively.

The rest of a Thief's abilities are all for hate management, though the two most noteworthy ones are Sneak Attack and Trick Attack, a party Thief's bread and butter. Both attacks do enormous amounts of damage, and make the enemies believe someone else did that damage - such as the party's tank.

To see details of the job's abilities, see here.

Stats

Thieves have very sensible stats, enabling loads of running, hiding, and attacking from the shadows. They have only average Strength and Vitality, but extremely high Agility, and the highest Dexterity in the game, which helps with critical attacks and Sneak Attack and Trick Attack damage. On the flip side, they have the lowest Mind and Charisma… two stats that they never use at all, anyway. Despite that, they have decent Intelligence, which may affect lock-picking, and certainly affects the damage they do - and thus heal - with Bloody Bolts.

They also, of course, have the highest evasion in the game, at a lovely, lovely A+. Helping that is a slightly lower parrying of A-, and a low shield of F - but most Thieves would use a Ninja subjob and dual-wield daggers, and wouldn't even see a shield after level 20, anyway.

Equips

Thieves use daggers, starting from their first useful dagger weaponskill at level 33, because of their A- skill in them. Of course, they can equip swords, clubs, and hand-to-hand weapons, but they're less-than-stellar at them, and should only use them - "them" meaning swords, mainly - at low levels, to make up for daggers' low damage. After all, sword only sits at a D, and the other two at E.

Thieves can also use a large number of projectiles - crossbows, bows, and boomerangs and certain other throwing weapons. Despite a similar(ly low) rank in them - C+, C-, and D, respectively - Thieves will predominantly use crossbows, not for their damage, but for the status bolts they can shoot, all kinds, for all kinds of situations.

The job-specific equipment sets for Thieves look fairly traditional; their artifact set uses the classic green-and-white thiefy color scheme. Their relic and empyrean sets, however, sport somewhat darker, more assassin-like colors, though the style remains similar.

Lore

Thieves are a tradition in video games, particularly Final Fantasy; there is no real questioning their existence, or their story. Most Thieves in Vana'diel, however, are Mithra, due to their solitary, unfriendly disposition.

The most famous Thief in Vana'diel is Nanaa Mihgo, known as the Cat Burglar. Though she causes a lot of trouble through a number of missions and quests, she's a rather permanent fixture in Windurst, and both the Star Sibyl and the Mithra Chieftainness tolerate her presence. She is the one who gives the players the quests for their Thief artifact armor set.
