Limit Break

This page remains incomplete.

This page endeavors to gather the various definitions and types of limit breaks in one place. The content is divided first according to the type of limit break, then its details from the various games it has appeared in.

Battle

The Limit Break type in battle is a special ability only usable under certain circumstances. Note that the battle-type Limit Breaks have appeared under several other names too, they won't be covered on this page.

To activate a FF7 Limit Break, the character must have been hit enough times in battle by enemies. This fills up the Limit Break Gauge. Once full, the gauge can be consumed (it is always consumed entirely) by using a special limit attack. Note that the status effect Fury makes the gauge fill up faster, the status effect Sadness makes it slower, and being KO'd will empty out the gauge entirely.

There are three levels of Limit Break abilities for each character, and most levels have two abilities each - except the final level, which always only has one ability. To be able to learn Limit Breaks of higher levels, you must first learn the first (or the only) ability of the previous level. Note that each ability has different requirements to learn it, see the ability's own page for details.

Note that each character must have a Limit Break level set at all times (the default is level 1), and they can only use abilities of the level that is set. The exception to this is Tifa, who can use every limit ability up to the level that is set.

Final Fantasy XIV

The FF14 Limit Break is a party-based attacking system. You can only do one of these attacks in a party, and higher-level limit breaks are available only in boss battles and/or when in a full party.

Limit Break Gauge size
Party Size Normal Battle Boss Battle
4+ (Light Party) 1 segment 2 segments
8 (Full Party) 2 segments 3 segments

To activate a Limit Break ability, the party must first gather enough Limit Break points to fill up at least one segment of the Limit Gauge. Each segment of the gauge represents one level of Limit Break - if a Limit Break is used when there are three segments of the gauge full, a level 3 Limit Break will be activated. The results of the Limit Break ability used depends on the class/job that activates the Limit Break, as well as its level. If you're unsure of a class or job's role, check its icon. A red background means a DD (you'll have to figure out if the DD is physical or magical type), blue is a tank and green is a healer/support.
