Mythology

Also known as "Wotan" in Old High German, Odin is the chief of the gods in Norse mythology. Though he has many nicknames, the most common one is "All Father". He, along with his less known brothers Ve and Vili, killed the giant Ymir and made the earth, Midgard, out of Ymir's body, and the first humans out of logs. His wife is the goddess Frigg, and he has many sons - both with her and other goddesses - the most famous of which are Baldr and Thor. One of his main residences is Valhalla, a place somewhat like Heaven for warriors. There, he commands Valkyries, women warriors under his command who seek out heroes amongst slain men of the world below in order for them to become Einherja who will fight by Odin side in Ragnarok, the final battle.

Though Odin is mainly associated with war, he is also known for poetry and wisdom, and stories surrounding him usually have to do with either battle or contemplation. He paid the price of one eye to be allowed a drink from the Fountain of Mimir in order to gain wisdom, and saw his own fate there. He also allowed himself to be traditionally sacrificed - though he didn't die - by being pierced on the side and hung from Yggdrasil, the World Tree, for 9 days and 9 nights, again for the sake of wisdom. Unlike most of the other gods, Odin does not spurn seid, witchcraft, though the trickster god Loki often insults him for doing something so womanly.

Strangely enough, Odin is, in many ways, similar to Loki, both of them using trickery and deception to get what they want. However, the two of them clash very often, the main rift between them created when Loki managed to get Baldr killed. Odin himself will be killed in the battle of Ragnarok by Loki's son, the wolf Fenrir, and Odin's son Vidar will in turn kill Fenrir and avenge him.

There are many artifacts - both living and non-living - associated with Odin. The most well-known, and most associated with the Final Fantasy series, is his spear Gungnir, a magical spear that never misses its target. Aside from that, he has Draupnir, a gold ring that creates 8 more duplicates ever 9 days; the head of Mimir, a wise man who could foretell the future; Sleipnir, an 8-legged horse who was Loki's son; Geri and Freki, a pair of wolves; and Huginn and Muginn, a pair of ravens whose names meant "Thought" and "Memory", respectively, and who told Odin about the events of the world.
