It was evening. Ellanore was sitting in her room, staring at a letter. She'd finished writing it this morning, and had carried it with her since then in the fear of it getting found before it was supposed to be found. She felt guilty over leaving like this. She didn't like deceiving her family, even though they were trying to smother her. Now, it was placed very visibly on her desk. All the things she deemed important enough to bring with her were packed, ready to be taken with her when she walked out, any moment now.
Ellanore sighed, and hoped there would have been another way. But she couldn't continue like this. She took a deep breath and rose up. She wouldn't turn back now, not after coming so far. It was time to leave.
She had gotten to the foot of the stairs when it happened. She saw her brother Dennellen, standing in the doorway to the kitchen. She froze.
"…you're really leaving, aren't you?" Ellanore looked down and gripped her bag tightly. Dennellen sighed. "I see." He walked to her, and to Ellanore's surprise hugged her tightly. "I'll miss you."
"You're not going to stop me?"
"No. You're no longer a child, you should decide your own path by yourself." Ellanore felt like crying at the words. She'd thought none of her family understood her, but it appeared not to be true.
"…thank you." She smiled at Dennellen through her tears. "I left a letter, explaining everything. Not where I'm going, though."
Dennellen nodded. "Be careful out there. Although I know you well enough to think you have a safety net to fall back on if something goes wrong."
Ellanore nodded and let go of him. "Of course." There was an awkward pause. Then she abruptly turned and walked to the door. "Goodbye, brother."
"Goodbye, Ellanore. May Altana watch over you." Ellanore smiled gently in response and walked out. The sky outside was aflame with sunset. She felt a lot better about leaving now, knowing that Dennellen was on her side.
