Ellanore fidgeted on her chair. She needed to talk to her mother, but for some reason the words would not come out of her mouth. She had been on the brink of it several times already, but in the end had backed down every time. But the night was falling now, and she had never been the type to put off something like this for too long. It needed to be done, so she would do it. Once again, she took a deep breath, and started. This time, for sure.
"Mother…"
"Yes, dear?" The two of them were sitting in the family living room on the first floor of the house. They thankfully had the room for themselves, otherwise Ellanore thought she might never get this done.
"Endahren visited today…"
"He has been coming over more often lately, hasn't he?" her mother remarked. She had been sewing something and reading a book while at it, but now looked up from her book and lowered her work, looking at Ellanore distractedly.
"Yes, I think so…" She didn't just think so, she was absolutely sure of it. But somehow, it came out sounding uncertain. "He…he asked me to come to his family's Starlight Celebration dinner, today." For some reason, she couldn't stop fiddling with the fabric of her pants, and felt exasparated at her own inability to put this more clearly. She would have to work on situations like this, this wouldn't do at all.
"What did you answer?" That was her mother's only reaction. Ellanore felt defeated. So that was it? Nothing special?
"I did not exactly answer anything…" Her cheeks burned a bit. That had been incredibly rude of her. What if the invite was really real? You couldn't just go and ignore an invite like that. Her mother was nodding.
"I see. You should go, dear. I'm sure it took a lot out of him to ask you."
Ellanore nodded silently. "Yes…" She paused for a moment. It really wasn't polite to turn the invite down either. "I'll go then. He told to ask Mrs Merchell for the details."
"Want me to do it for you?"
"If you'd please." She was horrified at the mere thought of having to communicate with Mrs Merchell herself. The thought hadn't even occurred to her before now, and the feeling surprised her. More situations where her courage was not enough. She really had to work hard for this.
Her mother nodded. "I'll make a visit to the Merchells tomorrow then. You should think of a present for Endahren, have you thought of that?"
"A present?" Yet another surprising aspect of this charade. How could she come up with a present for the man? She didn't even know him! She felt like crying. Or going to sleep. Both would be good, too. It wasn't her day.
