Prominence Point

Overview

Prominence Point (紅炎台 [kouen-dai] or 'point of solar prominence' in Japanese) is one of the highest accessible areas in the central highlands of Coerthas. It's located north of Dragonhead, not too far from the local aetheryte camp. Nearby also lies the beastman stronghold Natalan (to the south-east), and in version 1.x a tunnel complex leading to Crooked Fork in eastern highlands was also present. There is no sign of the tunnel after the Calamity, and it is unknown how and if Ishgard regained land access to the place.

Steel Vigil

On Prominence Point's highest hill lies Steel Vigil, one of the vigil fortresses set up to oversee the city of Ishgard and give it advance warning of approaching threats. Steel Vigil lies to the south-east of the city, and all that lies between the two is the Sea of Clouds. To access it on foot you need to head north and north-east from Camp Dragonhead.

Witchdrop

Witchdrop was moved to Prominence Point in version 2.0, whereas before it was located beside the Skyfire Locks in Dragonhead. There is a remote possibility that this is not a retcon and there are multiple places called witchdrops, but this is doubtful. The new witchdrop, instead of being a cliff next to the Sea of Clouds with no bottom perceptible or accessible, is a series of deep gorges connected by a cave system. Knights regularly patrol the bottom of the gorges.
Witchdrop obtained its name from its function - this is where those accused of heresy and consorting with the dragons are brought. The theory goes that if the accused is innocent, they will simply fall and die, whereas those who have sworn their lives to the dragons will grow wings and fly, thus revealing their true selves.
